Finding Purpose, Confidence and Paid Employment
When Jack McLean joined Little Gate Farm in 2022, he described himself as feeling “lost” and unsure about the direction his life was taking. He found communication challenging and lacked confidence in himself and his future. Today, Jack’s story is one of remarkable transformation. Four and a half years later, he has graduated from Little Gate Farm with confidence, independence, strong friendships and not one, but two jobs.
Throughout his time with Little Gate, Jack embraced every opportunity to learn new skills and gain valuable work experience. He completed placements with Keepers Coppicing, the Post Room at Conquest Hospital and Skinner’s Sheds, allowing him to explore different working environments and discover where his strengths lay.
In 2025, following a successful work experience placement, Jack secured paid employment with Skinner’s Sheds. His hard work, commitment and positive attitude impressed the team so much that they offered him a job. Building on this success, Jack started a second job with Hastings Sofa Company in 2026, creating even more opportunities for his future.
When asked to describe his journey at Little Gate, Jack summed it up in just four words:
“Finding my purpose again.”
Those words capture the impact of his time with Little Gate. Through tailored support, meaningful work experience and encouragement, Jack was able to develop the confidence, skills and self-belief needed to move into paid employment and build a brighter future.
Alongside his professional achievements, Jack became a much-loved member of the Little Gate community. He formed strong friendships with fellow trainees and staff, and his sense of humour became legendary, often entertaining others with his stand-up comedy. When fellow trainees were asked to describe Jack, they chose words such as determined, kind, friendly, sensible, motivated, proactive and confident.
Today, Jack is an inspiring role model for others beginning their own journey. From struggling to communicate and lacking direction, to becoming a confident young man with two jobs and a clear sense of purpose, his achievements demonstrate what is possible when people are given the right opportunities and support.
