When Abi arrived at Little Gate College in September 2024, confidence was a major barrier. Trusting adults was difficult, the fear of getting things wrong often held her back, and unfamiliar situations could feel overwhelming.

Two years later, Abi graduated from the Aspire Programme with qualifications, friendships, paid employment and a renewed belief in herself.

At the start of her journey, group activities and new experiences were often challenging. However, through determination and ongoing support, Abi gradually developed the confidence to build positive relationships with staff and peers. During her time at college, she made a genuine friendship and learned valuable strategies for managing her emotions.

One memorable moment highlighted just how much she had grown. At our Autism Awareness Tea and Cake event, Abi recognised the early signs of anxiety when the room became busy. Instead of becoming overwhelmed, she chose to step away, regulate independently and return when she felt ready. This simple but significant decision demonstrated her growing independence and self-awareness.

Work placements also played a key role in Abi’s development. During one placement spending time with the gardens, cafĂ© and animal care teams, she discovered a passion for working with animals. Staff noted her caring nature, enthusiasm and strong attention to detail. Alongside practical skills, Abi learned how to accept feedback, communicate effectively and overcome challenges when things didn’t go to plan.

Knowing how much she loved dogs, Abi embraced an opportunity with a local dog grooming and breeding business. Her dedication and positive attitude quickly made an impression, leading to an offer of part-time paid employment.

Reflecting on her success, Abi said, “Thank you. I’m a different person now. I love being at work, it’s amazing.”
